Al-Muddaththir سُورَةُ المُدَّثِّرِ

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلْمُدَّثِّرُ ﴿1﴾

O thou enveloped in thy cloak,

قُمْ فَأَنذِرْ ﴿2﴾

Arise and warn!

وَرَبَّكَ فَكَبِّرْ ﴿3﴾

Thy Lord magnify,

وَثِيَابَكَ فَطَهِّرْ ﴿4﴾

Thy raiment purify,

74:4 · Al-Muddaththir · juz 29 · page 575 · tafsir at quran.com

وَٱلرُّجْزَ فَٱهْجُرْ ﴿5﴾

Pollution shun!

74:5 · Al-Muddaththir · juz 29 · page 575 · tafsir at quran.com

وَلَا تَمْنُن تَسْتَكْثِرُ ﴿6﴾

And show not favour, seeking wordly gain!

وَلِرَبِّكَ فَٱصْبِرْ ﴿7﴾

For the sake of thy Lord, be patient!

فَإِذَا نُقِرَ فِى ٱلنَّاقُورِ ﴿8﴾

For when the trumpet shall sound,

فَذَٰلِكَ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ يَوْمٌ عَسِيرٌ ﴿9﴾

Surely that day will be a day of anguish,

عَلَى ٱلْكَٰفِرِينَ غَيْرُ يَسِيرٍۢ ﴿10﴾

Not of ease, for disbelievers.

74:10 · Al-Muddaththir · juz 29 · page 575 · tafsir at quran.com

ذَرْنِى وَمَنْ خَلَقْتُ وَحِيدًۭا ﴿11﴾

Leave Me (to deal) with him whom I created lonely,

74:11 · Al-Muddaththir · juz 29 · page 575 · tafsir at quran.com

وَجَعَلْتُ لَهُۥ مَالًۭا مَّمْدُودًۭا ﴿12﴾

And then bestowed upon him ample means,

74:12 · Al-Muddaththir · juz 29 · page 575 · tafsir at quran.com

وَبَنِينَ شُهُودًۭا ﴿13﴾

And sons abiding in his presence

74:13 · Al-Muddaththir · juz 29 · page 575 · tafsir at quran.com

وَمَهَّدتُّ لَهُۥ تَمْهِيدًۭا ﴿14﴾

And made (life) smooth for him.

ثُمَّ يَطْمَعُ أَنْ أَزِيدَ ﴿15﴾

Yet he desireth that I should give more.

كَلَّآ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ لِءَايَٰتِنَا عَنِيدًۭا ﴿16﴾

Nay! For lo! he hath been stubborn to Our revelations.

سَأُرْهِقُهُۥ صَعُودًا ﴿17﴾

On him I shall impose a fearful doom.

74:17 · Al-Muddaththir · juz 29 · page 575 · tafsir at quran.com

إِنَّهُۥ فَكَّرَ وَقَدَّرَ ﴿18﴾

For lo! he did consider; then he planned -

74:18 · Al-Muddaththir · juz 29 · page 576 · tafsir at quran.com

فَقُتِلَ كَيْفَ قَدَّرَ ﴿19﴾

(Self-)destroyed is he, how he planned!

74:19 · Al-Muddaththir · juz 29 · page 576 · tafsir at quran.com

ثُمَّ قُتِلَ كَيْفَ قَدَّرَ ﴿20﴾

Again (self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! -

74:20 · Al-Muddaththir · juz 29 · page 576 · tafsir at quran.com

ثُمَّ نَظَرَ ﴿21﴾

Then looked he,

74:21 · Al-Muddaththir · juz 29 · page 576 · tafsir at quran.com

ثُمَّ عَبَسَ وَبَسَرَ ﴿22﴾

Then frowned he and showed displeasure.

74:22 · Al-Muddaththir · juz 29 · page 576 · tafsir at quran.com

ثُمَّ أَدْبَرَ وَٱسْتَكْبَرَ ﴿23﴾

Then turned he away in pride

74:23 · Al-Muddaththir · juz 29 · page 576 · tafsir at quran.com

فَقَالَ إِنْ هَٰذَآ إِلَّا سِحْرٌۭ يُؤْثَرُ ﴿24﴾

And said: This is naught else than magic from of old;

74:24 · Al-Muddaththir · juz 29 · page 576 · tafsir at quran.com

إِنْ هَٰذَآ إِلَّا قَوْلُ ٱلْبَشَرِ ﴿25﴾

This is naught else than speech of mortal man.

سَأُصْلِيهِ سَقَرَ ﴿26﴾

Him shall I fling unto the burning.

74:26 · Al-Muddaththir · juz 29 · page 576 · tafsir at quran.com

وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا سَقَرُ ﴿27﴾

- Ah, what will convey unto thee what that burning is! -

لَا تُبْقِى وَلَا تَذَرُ ﴿28﴾

It leaveth naught; it spareth naught

74:28 · Al-Muddaththir · juz 29 · page 576 · tafsir at quran.com

لَوَّاحَةٌۭ لِّلْبَشَرِ ﴿29﴾

It shrivelleth the man.

عَلَيْهَا تِسْعَةَ عَشَرَ ﴿30﴾

Above it are nineteen.

وَمَا جَعَلْنَآ أَصْحَٰبَ ٱلنَّارِ إِلَّا مَلَٰٓئِكَةًۭ ۙ وَمَا جَعَلْنَا عِدَّتَهُمْ إِلَّا فِتْنَةًۭ لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ لِيَسْتَيْقِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْكِتَٰبَ وَيَزْدَادَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِيمَٰنًۭا ۙ وَلَا يَرْتَابَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْكِتَٰبَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ ۙ وَلِيَقُولَ ٱلَّذِينَ فِى قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌۭ وَٱلْكَٰفِرُونَ مَاذَآ أَرَادَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَٰذَا مَثَلًۭا ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يُضِلُّ ٱللَّهُ مَن يَشَآءُ وَيَهْدِى مَن يَشَآءُ ۚ وَمَا يَعْلَمُ جُنُودَ رَبِّكَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۚ وَمَا هِىَ إِلَّا ذِكْرَىٰ لِلْبَشَرِ ﴿31﴾

We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals.

كَلَّا وَٱلْقَمَرِ ﴿32﴾

Nay, by the Moon

وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذْ أَدْبَرَ ﴿33﴾

And the night when it withdraweth

74:33 · Al-Muddaththir · juz 29 · page 576 · tafsir at quran.com

وَٱلصُّبْحِ إِذَآ أَسْفَرَ ﴿34﴾

And the dawn when it shineth forth,

74:34 · Al-Muddaththir · juz 29 · page 576 · tafsir at quran.com

إِنَّهَا لَإِحْدَى ٱلْكُبَرِ ﴿35﴾

Lo! this is one of the greatest (portents)

74:35 · Al-Muddaththir · juz 29 · page 576 · tafsir at quran.com

نَذِيرًۭا لِّلْبَشَرِ ﴿36﴾

As a warning unto men,

74:36 · Al-Muddaththir · juz 29 · page 576 · tafsir at quran.com

لِمَن شَآءَ مِنكُمْ أَن يَتَقَدَّمَ أَوْ يَتَأَخَّرَ ﴿37﴾

Unto him of you who will advance or hang back.

كُلُّ نَفْسٍۭ بِمَا كَسَبَتْ رَهِينَةٌ ﴿38﴾

Every soul is a pledge for its own deeds;

إِلَّآ أَصْحَٰبَ ٱلْيَمِينِ ﴿39﴾

Save those who will stand on the right hand.

74:39 · Al-Muddaththir · juz 29 · page 576 · tafsir at quran.com

فِى جَنَّٰتٍۢ يَتَسَآءَلُونَ ﴿40﴾

In gardens they will ask one another

74:40 · Al-Muddaththir · juz 29 · page 576 · tafsir at quran.com

عَنِ ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ ﴿41﴾

Concerning the guilty:

74:41 · Al-Muddaththir · juz 29 · page 576 · tafsir at quran.com

مَا سَلَكَكُمْ فِى سَقَرَ ﴿42﴾

What hath brought you to this burning?

74:42 · Al-Muddaththir · juz 29 · page 576 · tafsir at quran.com

قَالُوا۟ لَمْ نَكُ مِنَ ٱلْمُصَلِّينَ ﴿43﴾

They will answer: We were not of those who prayed

74:43 · Al-Muddaththir · juz 29 · page 576 · tafsir at quran.com

وَلَمْ نَكُ نُطْعِمُ ٱلْمِسْكِينَ ﴿44﴾

Nor did we feed the wretched.

74:44 · Al-Muddaththir · juz 29 · page 576 · tafsir at quran.com

وَكُنَّا نَخُوضُ مَعَ ٱلْخَآئِضِينَ ﴿45﴾

We used to wade (in vain dispute) with (all) waders,

74:45 · Al-Muddaththir · juz 29 · page 576 · tafsir at quran.com

وَكُنَّا نُكَذِّبُ بِيَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ ﴿46﴾

And we used to deny the Day of Judgment,

74:46 · Al-Muddaththir · juz 29 · page 576 · tafsir at quran.com

حَتَّىٰٓ أَتَىٰنَا ٱلْيَقِينُ ﴿47﴾

Till the Inevitable came unto us.

74:47 · Al-Muddaththir · juz 29 · page 576 · tafsir at quran.com

فَمَا تَنفَعُهُمْ شَفَٰعَةُ ٱلشَّٰفِعِينَ ﴿48﴾

The mediation of no mediators will avail them then.

74:48 · Al-Muddaththir · juz 29 · page 577 · tafsir at quran.com

فَمَا لَهُمْ عَنِ ٱلتَّذْكِرَةِ مُعْرِضِينَ ﴿49﴾

Why now turn they away from the Admonishment,

كَأَنَّهُمْ حُمُرٌۭ مُّسْتَنفِرَةٌۭ ﴿50﴾

As they were frightened asses

74:50 · Al-Muddaththir · juz 29 · page 577 · tafsir at quran.com

فَرَّتْ مِن قَسْوَرَةٍۭ ﴿51﴾

Fleeing from a lion?

74:51 · Al-Muddaththir · juz 29 · page 577 · tafsir at quran.com

بَلْ يُرِيدُ كُلُّ ٱمْرِئٍۢ مِّنْهُمْ أَن يُؤْتَىٰ صُحُفًۭا مُّنَشَّرَةًۭ ﴿52﴾

Nay, but everyone of them desireth that he should be given open pages (from Allah).

كَلَّا ۖ بَل لَّا يَخَافُونَ ٱلْءَاخِرَةَ ﴿53﴾

Nay, verily. They fear not the Hereafter.

كَلَّآ إِنَّهُۥ تَذْكِرَةٌۭ ﴿54﴾

Nay, verily. Lo! this is an Admonishment.

فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ ﴿55﴾

So whosoever will may heed.

74:55 · Al-Muddaththir · juz 29 · page 577 · tafsir at quran.com

وَمَا يَذْكُرُونَ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُ ۚ هُوَ أَهْلُ ٱلتَّقْوَىٰ وَأَهْلُ ٱلْمَغْفِرَةِ ﴿56﴾

And they will not heed unless Allah willeth (it). He is the fount of fear. He is the fount of Mercy.
