Al-Balad سُورَةُ البَلَدِ

لَآ أُقْسِمُ بِهَٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ ﴿1﴾

Nay, I swear by this city -

وَأَنتَ حِلٌّۢ بِهَٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ ﴿2﴾

And thou art an indweller of this city -

وَوَالِدٍۢ وَمَا وَلَدَ ﴿3﴾

And the begetter and that which he begat,

لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ فِى كَبَدٍ ﴿4﴾

We verily have created man in an atmosphere:

أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّن يَقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ أَحَدٌۭ ﴿5﴾

Thinketh he that none hath power over him?

يَقُولُ أَهْلَكْتُ مَالًۭا لُّبَدًا ﴿6﴾

And he saith: I have destroyed vast wealth:

أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّمْ يَرَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ ﴿7﴾

Thinketh he that none beholdeth him?

أَلَمْ نَجْعَل لَّهُۥ عَيْنَيْنِ ﴿8﴾

Did We not assign unto him two eyes

90:8 · Al-Balad · juz 30 · page 594 · tafsir at quran.com

وَلِسَانًۭا وَشَفَتَيْنِ ﴿9﴾

And a tongue and two lips,

وَهَدَيْنَٰهُ ٱلنَّجْدَيْنِ ﴿10﴾

And guide him to the parting of the mountain ways?

فَلَا ٱقْتَحَمَ ٱلْعَقَبَةَ ﴿11﴾

But he hath not attempted the Ascent -

وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلْعَقَبَةُ ﴿12﴾

Ah, what will convey unto thee what the Ascent is! -

فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ ﴿13﴾

(It is) to free a slave,

90:13 · Al-Balad · juz 30 · page 594 · tafsir at quran.com

أَوْ إِطْعَٰمٌۭ فِى يَوْمٍۢ ذِى مَسْغَبَةٍۢ ﴿14﴾

And to feed in the day of hunger.

يَتِيمًۭا ذَا مَقْرَبَةٍ ﴿15﴾

An orphan near of kin,

90:15 · Al-Balad · juz 30 · page 594 · tafsir at quran.com

أَوْ مِسْكِينًۭا ذَا مَتْرَبَةٍۢ ﴿16﴾

Or some poor wretch in misery,

90:16 · Al-Balad · juz 30 · page 594 · tafsir at quran.com

ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلصَّبْرِ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلْمَرْحَمَةِ ﴿17﴾

And to be of those who believe and exhort one another to perseverance and exhort one another to pity.

أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ ﴿18﴾

Their place will be on the right hand.

وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا هُمْ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ ﴿19﴾

But those who disbelieve Our revelations, their place will be on the left hand.

عَلَيْهِمْ نَارٌۭ مُّؤْصَدَةٌۢ ﴿20﴾

Fire will be an awning over them.
