Al-Waaqia سُورَةُ الوَاقِعَةِ

إِذَا وَقَعَتِ ٱلْوَاقِعَةُ ﴿1﴾

When the event befalleth -

لَيْسَ لِوَقْعَتِهَا كَاذِبَةٌ ﴿2﴾

There is no denying that it will befall -

خَافِضَةٌۭ رَّافِعَةٌ ﴿3﴾

Abasing (some), exalting (others);

56:3 · Al-Waaqia · juz 27 · page 534 · tafsir at quran.com

إِذَا رُجَّتِ ٱلْأَرْضُ رَجًّۭا ﴿4﴾

When the earth is shaken with a shock

56:4 · Al-Waaqia · juz 27 · page 534 · tafsir at quran.com

وَبُسَّتِ ٱلْجِبَالُ بَسًّۭا ﴿5﴾

And the hills are ground to powder

56:5 · Al-Waaqia · juz 27 · page 534 · tafsir at quran.com

فَكَانَتْ هَبَآءًۭ مُّنۢبَثًّۭا ﴿6﴾

So that they become a scattered dust,

وَكُنتُمْ أَزْوَٰجًۭا ثَلَٰثَةًۭ ﴿7﴾

And ye will be three kinds:

فَأَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ مَآ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ ﴿8﴾

(First) those on the right hand; what of those on the right hand?

وَأَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ مَآ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ ﴿9﴾

And (then) those on the left hand; what of those on the left hand?

وَٱلسَّٰبِقُونَ ٱلسَّٰبِقُونَ ﴿10﴾

And the foremost in the race, the foremost in the race:

أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ ٱلْمُقَرَّبُونَ ﴿11﴾

Those are they who will be brought nigh

فِى جَنَّٰتِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ ﴿12﴾

In gardens of delight;

ثُلَّةٌۭ مِّنَ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ ﴿13﴾

A multitude of those of old

56:13 · Al-Waaqia · juz 27 · page 534 · tafsir at quran.com

وَقَلِيلٌۭ مِّنَ ٱلْءَاخِرِينَ ﴿14﴾

And a few of those of later time.

عَلَىٰ سُرُرٍۢ مَّوْضُونَةٍۢ ﴿15﴾

On lined couches,

56:15 · Al-Waaqia · juz 27 · page 534 · tafsir at quran.com

مُّتَّكِـِٔينَ عَلَيْهَا مُتَقَٰبِلِينَ ﴿16﴾

Reclining therein face to face.

56:16 · Al-Waaqia · juz 27 · page 534 · tafsir at quran.com

يَطُوفُ عَلَيْهِمْ وِلْدَٰنٌۭ مُّخَلَّدُونَ ﴿17﴾

There wait on them immortal youths

56:17 · Al-Waaqia · juz 27 · page 535 · tafsir at quran.com

بِأَكْوَابٍۢ وَأَبَارِيقَ وَكَأْسٍۢ مِّن مَّعِينٍۢ ﴿18﴾

With bowls and ewers and a cup from a pure spring

لَّا يُصَدَّعُونَ عَنْهَا وَلَا يُنزِفُونَ ﴿19﴾

Wherefrom they get no aching of the head nor any madness,

وَفَٰكِهَةٍۢ مِّمَّا يَتَخَيَّرُونَ ﴿20﴾

And fruit that they prefer

56:20 · Al-Waaqia · juz 27 · page 535 · tafsir at quran.com

وَلَحْمِ طَيْرٍۢ مِّمَّا يَشْتَهُونَ ﴿21﴾

And flesh of fowls that they desire.

56:21 · Al-Waaqia · juz 27 · page 535 · tafsir at quran.com

وَحُورٌ عِينٌۭ ﴿22﴾

And (there are) fair ones with wide, lovely eyes,

56:22 · Al-Waaqia · juz 27 · page 535 · tafsir at quran.com

كَأَمْثَٰلِ ٱللُّؤْلُؤِ ٱلْمَكْنُونِ ﴿23﴾

Like unto hidden pearls,

56:23 · Al-Waaqia · juz 27 · page 535 · tafsir at quran.com

جَزَآءًۢ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ ﴿24﴾

Reward for what they used to do.

56:24 · Al-Waaqia · juz 27 · page 535 · tafsir at quran.com

لَا يَسْمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغْوًۭا وَلَا تَأْثِيمًا ﴿25﴾

There hear they no vain speaking nor recrimination

56:25 · Al-Waaqia · juz 27 · page 535 · tafsir at quran.com

إِلَّا قِيلًۭا سَلَٰمًۭا سَلَٰمًۭا ﴿26﴾

(Naught) but the saying: Peace, (and again) Peace.

وَأَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْيَمِينِ مَآ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْيَمِينِ ﴿27﴾

And those on the right hand; what of those on the right hand?

فِى سِدْرٍۢ مَّخْضُودٍۢ ﴿28﴾

Among thornless lote-trees

وَطَلْحٍۢ مَّنضُودٍۢ ﴿29﴾

And clustered plantains,

56:29 · Al-Waaqia · juz 27 · page 535 · tafsir at quran.com

وَظِلٍّۢ مَّمْدُودٍۢ ﴿30﴾

And spreading shade,

56:30 · Al-Waaqia · juz 27 · page 535 · tafsir at quran.com

وَمَآءٍۢ مَّسْكُوبٍۢ ﴿31﴾

And water gushing,

56:31 · Al-Waaqia · juz 27 · page 535 · tafsir at quran.com

وَفَٰكِهَةٍۢ كَثِيرَةٍۢ ﴿32﴾

And fruit in plenty

56:32 · Al-Waaqia · juz 27 · page 535 · tafsir at quran.com

لَّا مَقْطُوعَةٍۢ وَلَا مَمْنُوعَةٍۢ ﴿33﴾

Neither out of reach nor yet forbidden,

56:33 · Al-Waaqia · juz 27 · page 535 · tafsir at quran.com

وَفُرُشٍۢ مَّرْفُوعَةٍ ﴿34﴾

And raised couches;

56:34 · Al-Waaqia · juz 27 · page 535 · tafsir at quran.com

إِنَّآ أَنشَأْنَٰهُنَّ إِنشَآءًۭ ﴿35﴾

Lo! We have created them a (new) creation

56:35 · Al-Waaqia · juz 27 · page 535 · tafsir at quran.com

فَجَعَلْنَٰهُنَّ أَبْكَارًا ﴿36﴾

And made them virgins,

56:36 · Al-Waaqia · juz 27 · page 535 · tafsir at quran.com

عُرُبًا أَتْرَابًۭا ﴿37﴾

Lovers, friends,

56:37 · Al-Waaqia · juz 27 · page 535 · tafsir at quran.com

لِّأَصْحَٰبِ ٱلْيَمِينِ ﴿38﴾

For those on the right hand;

56:38 · Al-Waaqia · juz 27 · page 535 · tafsir at quran.com

ثُلَّةٌۭ مِّنَ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ ﴿39﴾

A multitude of those of old

56:39 · Al-Waaqia · juz 27 · page 535 · tafsir at quran.com

وَثُلَّةٌۭ مِّنَ ٱلْءَاخِرِينَ ﴿40﴾

And a multitude of those of later time.

وَأَصْحَٰبُ ٱلشِّمَالِ مَآ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلشِّمَالِ ﴿41﴾

And those on the left hand: What of those on the left hand?

فِى سَمُومٍۢ وَحَمِيمٍۢ ﴿42﴾

In scorching wind and scalding water

56:42 · Al-Waaqia · juz 27 · page 535 · tafsir at quran.com

وَظِلٍّۢ مِّن يَحْمُومٍۢ ﴿43﴾

And shadow of black smoke,

لَّا بَارِدٍۢ وَلَا كَرِيمٍ ﴿44﴾

Neither cool nor refreshing.

56:44 · Al-Waaqia · juz 27 · page 535 · tafsir at quran.com

إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ قَبْلَ ذَٰلِكَ مُتْرَفِينَ ﴿45﴾

Lo! heretofore they were effete with luxury

وَكَانُوا۟ يُصِرُّونَ عَلَى ٱلْحِنثِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ ﴿46﴾

And used to persist in the awful sin.

وَكَانُوا۟ يَقُولُونَ أَئِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًۭا وَعِظَٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَبْعُوثُونَ ﴿47﴾

And they used to say: When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised again,

أَوَءَابَآؤُنَا ٱلْأَوَّلُونَ ﴿48﴾

And also our forefathers?

56:48 · Al-Waaqia · juz 27 · page 535 · tafsir at quran.com

قُلْ إِنَّ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ وَٱلْءَاخِرِينَ ﴿49﴾

Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Lo! those of old and those of later time

لَمَجْمُوعُونَ إِلَىٰ مِيقَٰتِ يَوْمٍۢ مَّعْلُومٍۢ ﴿50﴾

Will all be brought together to the tryst of an appointed day.

56:50 · Al-Waaqia · juz 27 · page 535 · tafsir at quran.com

ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمْ أَيُّهَا ٱلضَّآلُّونَ ٱلْمُكَذِّبُونَ ﴿51﴾

Then lo! ye, the erring, the deniers,

لَءَاكِلُونَ مِن شَجَرٍۢ مِّن زَقُّومٍۢ ﴿52﴾

Ye verily will eat of a tree called Zaqqum

56:52 · Al-Waaqia · juz 27 · page 536 · tafsir at quran.com

فَمَالِـُٔونَ مِنْهَا ٱلْبُطُونَ ﴿53﴾

And will fill your bellies therewith;

56:53 · Al-Waaqia · juz 27 · page 536 · tafsir at quran.com

فَشَٰرِبُونَ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ ٱلْحَمِيمِ ﴿54﴾

And thereon ye will drink of boiling water,

56:54 · Al-Waaqia · juz 27 · page 536 · tafsir at quran.com

فَشَٰرِبُونَ شُرْبَ ٱلْهِيمِ ﴿55﴾

Drinking even as the camel drinketh.

56:55 · Al-Waaqia · juz 27 · page 536 · tafsir at quran.com

هَٰذَا نُزُلُهُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلدِّينِ ﴿56﴾

This will be their welcome on the Day of Judgment.

نَحْنُ خَلَقْنَٰكُمْ فَلَوْلَا تُصَدِّقُونَ ﴿57﴾

We created you. Will ye then admit the truth?

56:57 · Al-Waaqia · juz 27 · page 536 · tafsir at quran.com

أَفَرَءَيْتُم مَّا تُمْنُونَ ﴿58﴾

Have ye seen that which ye emit?

56:58 · Al-Waaqia · juz 27 · page 536 · tafsir at quran.com

ءَأَنتُمْ تَخْلُقُونَهُۥٓ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْخَٰلِقُونَ ﴿59﴾

Do ye create it or are We the Creator?

56:59 · Al-Waaqia · juz 27 · page 536 · tafsir at quran.com

نَحْنُ قَدَّرْنَا بَيْنَكُمُ ٱلْمَوْتَ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَسْبُوقِينَ ﴿60﴾

We mete out death among you, and We are not to be outrun,

عَلَىٰٓ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ أَمْثَٰلَكُمْ وَنُنشِئَكُمْ فِى مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ ﴿61﴾

That We may transfigure you and make you what ye know not.

56:61 · Al-Waaqia · juz 27 · page 536 · tafsir at quran.com

وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْتُمُ ٱلنَّشْأَةَ ٱلْأُولَىٰ فَلَوْلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ ﴿62﴾

And verily ye know the first creation. Why, then, do ye not reflect?

أَفَرَءَيْتُم مَّا تَحْرُثُونَ ﴿63﴾

Have ye seen that which ye cultivate?

56:63 · Al-Waaqia · juz 27 · page 536 · tafsir at quran.com

ءَأَنتُمْ تَزْرَعُونَهُۥٓ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلزَّٰرِعُونَ ﴿64﴾

Is it ye who foster it, or are We the Fosterer?

لَوْ نَشَآءُ لَجَعَلْنَٰهُ حُطَٰمًۭا فَظَلْتُمْ تَفَكَّهُونَ ﴿65﴾

If We willed, We verily could make it chaff, then would ye cease not to exclaim:

إِنَّا لَمُغْرَمُونَ ﴿66﴾

Lo! we are laden with debt!

56:66 · Al-Waaqia · juz 27 · page 536 · tafsir at quran.com

بَلْ نَحْنُ مَحْرُومُونَ ﴿67﴾

Nay, but we are deprived!

56:67 · Al-Waaqia · juz 27 · page 536 · tafsir at quran.com

أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ ٱلْمَآءَ ٱلَّذِى تَشْرَبُونَ ﴿68﴾

Have ye observed the water which ye drink?

ءَأَنتُمْ أَنزَلْتُمُوهُ مِنَ ٱلْمُزْنِ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْمُنزِلُونَ ﴿69﴾

Is it ye who shed it from the raincloud, or are We the Shedder?

لَوْ نَشَآءُ جَعَلْنَٰهُ أُجَاجًۭا فَلَوْلَا تَشْكُرُونَ ﴿70﴾

If We willed We verily could make it bitter. Why then, give ye not thanks?

أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ ٱلنَّارَ ٱلَّتِى تُورُونَ ﴿71﴾

Have ye observed the fire which ye strike out;

ءَأَنتُمْ أَنشَأْتُمْ شَجَرَتَهَآ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْمُنشِـُٔونَ ﴿72﴾

Was it ye who made the tree thereof to grow, or were We the grower?

نَحْنُ جَعَلْنَٰهَا تَذْكِرَةًۭ وَمَتَٰعًۭا لِّلْمُقْوِينَ ﴿73﴾

We, even We, appointed it a memorial and a comfort for the dwellers in the wilderness.

فَسَبِّحْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلْعَظِيمِ ﴿74﴾

Therefor (O Muhammad), praise the name of thy Lord, the Tremendous.

۞ فَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِمَوَٰقِعِ ٱلنُّجُومِ ﴿75﴾

Nay, I swear by the places of the stars -

وَإِنَّهُۥ لَقَسَمٌۭ لَّوْ تَعْلَمُونَ عَظِيمٌ ﴿76﴾

And lo! that verily is a tremendous oath, if ye but knew -

إِنَّهُۥ لَقُرْءَانٌۭ كَرِيمٌۭ ﴿77﴾

That (this) is indeed a noble Qur'an

56:77 · Al-Waaqia · juz 27 · page 537 · tafsir at quran.com

فِى كِتَٰبٍۢ مَّكْنُونٍۢ ﴿78﴾

In a Book kept hidden

56:78 · Al-Waaqia · juz 27 · page 537 · tafsir at quran.com

لَّا يَمَسُّهُۥٓ إِلَّا ٱلْمُطَهَّرُونَ ﴿79﴾

Which none toucheth save the purified,

56:79 · Al-Waaqia · juz 27 · page 537 · tafsir at quran.com

تَنزِيلٌۭ مِّن رَّبِّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ ﴿80﴾

A revelation from the Lord of the Worlds.

56:80 · Al-Waaqia · juz 27 · page 537 · tafsir at quran.com

أَفَبِهَٰذَا ٱلْحَدِيثِ أَنتُم مُّدْهِنُونَ ﴿81﴾

Is it this Statement that ye scorn,

وَتَجْعَلُونَ رِزْقَكُمْ أَنَّكُمْ تُكَذِّبُونَ ﴿82﴾

And make denial thereof your livelihood?

56:82 · Al-Waaqia · juz 27 · page 537 · tafsir at quran.com

فَلَوْلَآ إِذَا بَلَغَتِ ٱلْحُلْقُومَ ﴿83﴾

Why, then, when (the soul) cometh up to the throat (of the dying)

وَأَنتُمْ حِينَئِذٍۢ تَنظُرُونَ ﴿84﴾

And ye are at that moment looking

56:84 · Al-Waaqia · juz 27 · page 537 · tafsir at quran.com

وَنَحْنُ أَقْرَبُ إِلَيْهِ مِنكُمْ وَلَٰكِن لَّا تُبْصِرُونَ ﴿85﴾

- And We are nearer unto him than ye are, but ye see not -

فَلَوْلَآ إِن كُنتُمْ غَيْرَ مَدِينِينَ ﴿86﴾

Why then, if ye are not in bondage (unto Us),

56:86 · Al-Waaqia · juz 27 · page 537 · tafsir at quran.com

تَرْجِعُونَهَآ إِن كُنتُمْ صَٰدِقِينَ ﴿87﴾

Do ye not force it back, if ye are truthful?

56:87 · Al-Waaqia · juz 27 · page 537 · tafsir at quran.com

فَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُقَرَّبِينَ ﴿88﴾

Thus if he is of those brought nigh,

فَرَوْحٌۭ وَرَيْحَانٌۭ وَجَنَّتُ نَعِيمٍۢ ﴿89﴾

Then breath of life, and plenty, and a Garden of delight.

وَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنْ أَصْحَٰبِ ٱلْيَمِينِ ﴿90﴾

And if he is of those on the right hand,

56:90 · Al-Waaqia · juz 27 · page 537 · tafsir at quran.com

فَسَلَٰمٌۭ لَّكَ مِنْ أَصْحَٰبِ ٱلْيَمِينِ ﴿91﴾

Then (the greeting) "Peace be unto thee" from those on the right hand.

وَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَ ٱلضَّآلِّينَ ﴿92﴾

But if he is of the rejecters, the erring,

فَنُزُلٌۭ مِّنْ حَمِيمٍۢ ﴿93﴾

Then the welcome will be boiling water

56:93 · Al-Waaqia · juz 27 · page 537 · tafsir at quran.com

وَتَصْلِيَةُ جَحِيمٍ ﴿94﴾

And roasting at hell-fire.

إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَهُوَ حَقُّ ٱلْيَقِينِ ﴿95﴾

Lo! this is certain truth.

فَسَبِّحْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلْعَظِيمِ ﴿96﴾

Therefor (O Muhammad) praise the name of thy Lord, the Tremendous.
